Working Together for a Goal

In the past months Greenfield has kicked off a new 5S program consisting of detailed audits and monthly 5S events. The monthly audit grades each department on how well they follow the 5 steps, but also includes opportunities to gain or lose points for bonus categories such as out-of-process parts.

5S is a methodology commonly used in production environments to keep workstations clean and organized to encourage efficient processes.

The 5 sections of 5s are Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain. To summarize these steps briefly; remove any materials that aren’t completely necessary to the operation, all tools should be kept in organized, labelled storage, all housekeeping tasks such as sweeping, mopping, or disinfecting your keyboard such be done regularly, always perform processes in the same manner, and continue to sustain improvements by keeping 5S as part of every workday.

In July one of the departments- the degrease and color station on the manufacturing side- scored a -10 with floating parts, safety violations, cluttered walkways, and a generous coating of grime on most surfaces. This called for a serious 5S event. The LEAN team reeled in volunteers from across the plant to come help. It was impressive to see other supervisors, folks from planning and engineering, and even more, spending a few hours to clean and organize with so much energy!

In the next month’s audit, the department’s score jumped 65 points to a total of 55, these are exactly the kind of big improvements that a 5S program is meant to bring us. Moving forward the program will soon be revamped even further and departments should be looking forward to a new challenge to earn a frozen treat party.

After much planning it is safe to say Family Day 2023 was a great success. Everyone who came out to enjoy time together made it a fabulous day. We had a total of 380 people!!

The weather was beautiful and things came together perfectly with help from great volunteers. Ty and Anthony put their trust in many people to pull off a day of tournaments, kid’s activities, refreshments, live music, door prizes, and much more.

With the weather a little warm, the snow cones were a refreshing snack, as well as the beverages on the Haulin’ Hops truck! The food from Palmettos Catering was great with BBQ, hamburgers, and hot dogs.

The kids had an awesome playground with the foam pit, fire hydrant sprinkler thanks to the Corinth-Shiloh Vol. Fire Dept., bouncy house, dinosaur dig, craft table, face painter and popcorn for a little snack, and the sack races were a lot of fun to watch.

The plant tours stayed busy with family members seeing what employees do and where they work, which is always a big hit, even with the kids!

The room for Bingo was usually full and they walked away with some awesome prizes! Ping-pong and cards were also played in the cool air conditioner of the TDC building.

A little competition is always good and that definitely played out during the cornhole and horseshoe tournaments and the disk golf was fun to play.

The day started and ended with the Hot Notes band who played great music, and even provided some special requests, and all employees left with a Greenfield towel.

The FTO Expansion project – championed by the LEAN group-aims to decrease total distance of foot travel for FTO operations, move packaging operations out of the warehouse, and foster self-sufficiency within the threading department. Initially, FTO only consisted of taps, then low running drills began to be added, but FTO’s infrastructure needed to grow as well to allow for greater capacity.

FTO Definition

FTO - Finish to Order- parts are low demand products that will no longer be stocked in the warehouse in their final state. Instead, the parts will be made from semi via a paperless order that will be walked through and shipped the same day. Customers can place orders for multiple FTO (or regular) parts, these parts will be individually picked or processed then gathered at the consolidation point. Leaving these FGs as semi’s until they are needed increases the capacity of the FG warehouse and increases the variability of the unlasered inventory since the semi is likely used as multiple FGs. This is a win for service as it increases the likelihood of being able to quickly make the FGs as soon as they are needed. Additionally, FTO removes chance of certain FG’s needing to be unpacked, buffed, re-lasered, and re-labeled to make a substitution for a different FG.

Project Progress

The expansion project consists of two main phases. Phase one’s major accomplishment was to integrate Mod_Cell’s operations into the packaging department and to become a hub for drills FTO in close range of label printers and tubes. To make room for this, the satellite break area was temporarily closed, and some smaller operations were rearranged.

Phase two focuses on threading self-sufficiency, this refers to the changes that are waiting on a doorway to be opened between the threading room and packaging. Plans for the threading department include rearranging an area to accommodate the tap and die lasers, as well as label and pack stations. After these stations are put in place all operations for taps will take place within the threading department.

New Break Area

A new break area has opened in the back of the warehouse. Recently named Café 202, in memory of department 202 which used to sit in the same space, the new break area comes complete with; a Cromer minimarket to replace the previous break area’s mix-n-matched vending machines, freshly painted walls, new ceiling lights, and stylish new tables and chairs. While the previous break area was located in the packaging department, the new café 202 provides a quieter place to sit for lunch or grab a drink from the new coffee machine. Further plans for café 202 include a partition between it and the rest of the warehouse and coat racks/ storage for personal belongings.

Sales Team is Going Strong!

With in person events and customer visits increasing, the Greenfield Sales team has been in full force for the past few months; spreading the Greenfield message far and wide. As many of you have noticed, a lot of folks have been touring, training, and applying hands-on experience in our facility. Every group that has visited our manufacturing facility has been very impressed and have had nothing but positive feedback. These opportunities are vital to the development and industry competency of our sales force.

These groups have included a host of sales agents and distributors who are eager to learn more about our brands, products, and the problems we solve. Thank you so much, to everyone, for being gracious hosts, and outstanding representation of our Greenfield Team!
